Immersive audio specialist Areal has won a highly regarded Red Dot Design Award in the Product Design category for its SR1 spatial reference headphones.
The Red Dot Design Award is a respected international program organized by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany. Each entry is assessed by around 40 experts against criteria spanning innovation, functionality, and longevity. Winners are permitted to display the coveted “Red Dot” label.
“We’re thrilled that the judges selected SR1 from among the thousands of products submitted for these prestigious awards,” commented Areal co-founder Pieter Doms. “Every aspect of SR1’s engineering is a response to the challenges faced by audio professionals needing to work with spatial content beyond the studio. The most conspicuous innovation is the integration of four drivers in each earcup for true spatial monitoring without binaural emulation. We optimized every detail of the SR1, from its plug ‘n play USB-C connection with a laptop to its custom controller and DAC, all to allow seamless immersive listening and creation on the move.”
The system’s design also reflects its intended use in education settings where it can free students to hone their spatial mixing skills outside of limited studio hours. As the SR1 does not rely on HTFR or other personalization and features swappable magnetic earpads, multiple users can easily share headphones.
The SR1 launched in April 2026, following more than five years of development, field testing and refinement. The system enables accurate stereo, 5.1, and 7.1.4 monitoring outside the post-production, immersive music mixing, or broadcast studio environment. The quad-driver architecture in each earcup combines with Areal’s Acoustic Image Mapping (AIM™) technology to physically distribute surround information across dedicated drivers for front, rear, and height channels, preserving spatial separation in a controlled and consistent way. The system comes in a bespoke travel case accommodating the headphones, companion controller unit, and custom cables.
