How upmixing transforms stereo into immersive audio

Most music and media today is still delivered in stereo, a left and a right channel. It’s a familiar format, but it has its limitations when played back through modern multi-speaker systems or immersive setups.

That’s where upmixing comes in. Upmixing is the process of converting stereo content into a multidimensional experience, placing sounds around the listener without altering the original recording. Done right, it’s not just wider, it’s deeper, more enveloping, and more engaging.

THE UPMIX ENGINE achieves this by splitting the stereo signal into multiple, non-overlapping audio signals that don’t interfere with each other when played back together.

This isn’t about extracting stems or remixing the track. We don’t isolate vocals or drums, and we don’t add artificial elements like reverb or spatial panning.

Instead, the system analyses the spectral content of the stereo mix and intelligently distributes different parts of the signal across available speakers.

When these signals are played back through a properly configured speaker setup, your brain does the rest, fusing them into a convincing spatial image that feels immersive and natural.

One key advantage of this approach is that it works across a wide variety of playback environments. In studio control rooms or home cinema setups, the UPMIX ENGINE supports standard immersive formats like 5.1, 7.1.4.

For live sound applications, where delay between speakers can be a challenge, a frontal configuration is often preferred, for example, using four or six speakers across the stage width. Because the engine’s output avoids common phase and comb-filtering issues, it delivers a coherent, rich sound image even in challenging acoustic spaces. In fact, the traditional “sweet spot” becomes less critical, the immersive effect remains convincing across a broader listening area.

There’s one exception to the “no processing” rule: height. To create a realistic sense of elevation, the system does apply additional signal shaping to the top speakers. This enhances the illusion of space and depth without overwhelming the integrity of the original mix.

The result is a balanced, stable sound field that draws listeners into the content, whether they're mixing in the studio, enjoying a film at home, or standing in front of a concert stage.

The UPMIX ENGINE doesn’t try to rewrite the mix, it simply lets you experience more of it. By respecting the source and adapting to the playback environment, it brings immersive audio to stereo content in a way that’s both technically elegant and emotionally compelling.
